Blue Ridge Parkway
Authorized in the 1930s as a Depression–era public works project, the Blue Ridge Parkway was more than a half–century in the making. Building the Parkway through mountainous terrain was no simple task. It was the nation’s first, and ultimately longest, rural parkway, connecting Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. A by–product of this amazing endeavor is the lasting standards for parkway engineering and design that were pioneered here.|

Blue Ridge Parkway In Winter. The Blue Ridge Parkway is open 365 days a year, weather permitting. Occasionally during the winter months, road repair is undertaken whereupon detours will be posted. Since the Parkway is not plowed or salted in the winter, portions may be closed until the snow or ice melts. It’s better to be safe than sorry so makes sure to call the Parkway’s 24–hour information line at 828–298–0398 for the latest road conditions or visit www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm for general travel information. [Top] Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway. The speed limit is 45 miles per hour–a little less in some places–as the Parkway was not designed as a motor speedway. It is not necessary to be at an overlook to stop and enjoy the scenery. Unless otherwise posted, parking is permitted along road shoulders. Make sure to pull your car completely off the road so as not to endanger yourself or others. Wildlife, such as deer, will make an appearance–usually without warning. Discretion is the better part of valor when driving in fog and rain. Slow down and turn on your headlights. [Top]
